What’s in the town centre?
One of the best things about Huddersfield is that almost everything you need is within walking distance. The town centre is a mix of old and new. You’ll find historic architecture next to trendy coffee shops and high street staples. If you’re in the mood for shopping the Kingsgate and Packhorse centres are your go to for fashion beauty and home essentials. Looking for something a bit different? Head down Byram Street for vintage clothing and indie finds. And if you need a place to chill between lectures Market Street is dotted with cafés and bakeries perfect for a quick bite or a full on study session. New to town is Huddersfield Light a brand new leisure complex where you’ll find a cinema bowling mini golf and places to grab food with friends. Great for a rainy day escape or a spontaneous night out.

Life beyond lectures
Life at Huddersfield isn’t just about lectures – it’s about getting involved, meeting people, and trying new things. The Students’ Union runs a huge range of sports teams and societies, so whether you’re into football, yoga, gaming, or debating, there’s something for everyone. Active Hud, part of the Union, offers sports, fitness classes, and competitions, making it easy to stay active and have fun at the same time. The Students’ Union also hosts social events, themed nights, and activities throughout the year, giving you plenty of chances to relax and enjoy student life. If you prefer some fresh air, Huddersfield has plenty of parks and green spaces perfect for a walk, a picnic, or just unwinding between lectures. From keeping active with sports through Active Hud to discovering new hobbies in societies, the Students’ Union makes it easy to enjoy life beyond the lecture theatre

When you need support
Settling in can be a lot. And while Huddersfield is a warm welcoming place it’s normal to feel overwhelmed sometimes. The SU Advice Centre is there to help with anything life throws your way academic issues housing worries money matters or just someone to talk to. It’s free confidential and completely separate from the University which makes it a safe space if you need it. Whether you’re after quick advice or a proper sit down chat they’ve got your back.
Foodie favourites
Huddersfield’s food scene is diverse student friendly and affordable three things we love to hear. For a proper chippy tea My Cod Fisheries is a local gem. Fancy something a bit different? Try Thai Sakon for amazing Thai dishes or Apadana for rich Persian flavours. If you're craving comfort food the pies at Lockwood Pie Shop are pretty legendary. Cooking at home? Check out Dong Dong Supermarket or Khubba Halal Supermarket for international ingredients that you might not find in the big chains.

Nature breaks and study escapes
When you need a breather from the library, Huddersfield has some gorgeous green spaces worth exploring. You’ll soon find your favourite spot for switching off and recharging.

Greenhead Park is perfect for a walk a picnic or just lying on the grass between lectures.

Castle Hill gives you panoramic views over the town totally worth the walk up.

Beaumont Park is tucked away but well worth a visit for peaceful woodland trails and Insta worthy views.

Where to go out
Huddersfield's nightlife has something for everyone. It’s not the biggest party town in the world, but what it does, it does well. The Parish is a favourite for live music lovers with a buzzing atmosphere and regular gigs. Revolution is perfect for cocktails and socialising with a bigger group, while Warehouse, Mavericks, Limit, and Ballers are popular student spots for dancing, themed nights, and letting loose. For a more relaxed evening, Hush is ideal, and Durty O’Dwyer’s remains a classic pub with a lively, welcoming vibe. If you prefer something quieter, Huddersfield has local pubs hosting quiz nights, open mic sessions, and comedy events, especially at the Lawrence Batley Theatre. With so many venues to choose from, it’s easy to find the perfect night out, whether you’re after a big night, a casual evening, or a mix of both.
